Cards drop GU women

Megan Deines and Jude Schimmel each scored 16 points to help No. 7 Louisville beat Gonzaga 55-42 on Wednesday night in the semifinals of the Hardwood Tournament of Hope in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

Louisville (5-0) led by eight at the half before Gonzaga cut it to 44-40 with 8:12 left. That’s as close as the Bulldogs would get as the Cardinals scored the next 11 points.

Shoni Schimmel had seven points during the burst as the Bulldogs went without a point for over 8 minutes. Danielle Walter’s layup with 2 seconds left ended the drought.

Taelor Karr led Gonzaga (5-1) with nine points. The Zags shot just 30 percent from the field.

Louisville will face Oregon State in the championship game today. Gonzaga plays Winthrop at 3 p.m. Pacific time.

Washington 60, Wisconsin 55: The Huskies used a 20-4 run in the second half en route to a nonconference victory over the Badgers in Madison, Wis.

Jazmine Davis scored 22 points to lead Washington (3-1), which fell behind by double digits in the first half before battling back. The Huskies held Wisconsin scoreless for a nearly seven-minute stretch in the second half.

The Huskies host Pepperdine on Tuesday.
