Gonzaga women defeat Winthrop in Mexico

PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico – The Gonzaga University women’s basketball team defeated Winthrop 80-66 on Thursday in the consolation game of the Hardwood Tournament of Hope.

Four players scored in double figures for the Zags, led by freshman Elle Tinkle, who had her first double-figures game as a collegian.

Junior Jazmine Redmon added 13 points, 11 in the second half, and Haiden Palmer scored all 12 of her points in the final half. Senior Taelor Karr added 10.

Redmon and Karr each had six assists.

The Bulldogs shot 47.7 percent (31 of 65), including 38.9 percent (7 of 18) on 3-point attempts.

Winthrop (2-3) had three players in double digits led by Dequesha McClanahan with 21.

Tinkle made all four of her shots from the field in the first half and also made both of her free throws to score nine points for the Zags, who led 42-14 at halftime.

Redshirt freshman Shelby Cheslek came off the bench to add eight points in the half on 4-of-5 shooting.

The Bulldogs’ largest lead of the game was 19, at 80-61.Gonzaga, which played five games in seven days, next plays on Dec. 2, when it hosts No. 1 Stanford.
