Turnovers cost Pirates 1st loss

Despite getting a career-high 20 points from freshman KC McConnell, the Whitworth women’s basketball team could not overcome 15 turnovers as the Pirates fell 75-60 to Cal Lutheran on Monday night in Gilbert Sports and Fitness Center in Thousand Oaks, Calif.

The teams traded runs and leads in the first half with Whitworth (4-1) ahead 33-31 at the break.

But after senior Lauren Picha hit a 3-pointer to start the second half and put the Pirates up by five, Cal Lutheran (3-1) gradually took command and the Pirates were unable to come up with an answer.

The Pirates made nine 3-pointers, but the Regals scored 22 points off turnovers and 12 on fast breaks.

McConnell also had a team-high six rebounds as Whitworth had a 36-34 advantage on the boards.

Junior Emily Travis added 13 points for the Bucs.

• Lexie Nelson, Eastern Washington’s sophomore guard, was named to the Cal Classic all-tournament team after averaging 10 points with four assists, three rebounds and one steal as the Eagles went 1-1.
