In brief: Volunteers needed for tax assistance

SPOKANE COUNTY – The Spokane County United Way is looking for volunteers who will be trained to provide free income tax assistance to low-income workers and senior citizens.

Volunteers will help prepare taxes, screen paperwork and help run the tax assistance sites. People can volunteer as little as four hours a week from February to April.

Tax assistance sites will be located at the Medical Lake City Hall, the Northeast Community Center, the Numerica Credit Union on Havana Street, Spokane County United Way, and libraries in Cheney, Deer Park, downtown Spokane, Moran Prairie and Spokane Valley.

The required training is available online or in a classroom. To become a tax volunteer, call United Way at (509) 838-6581 or send an email to freetaxprep@ unitedwayspokane.org.

Fundraiser features candleholders

Lilac Festival names candidates

The Spokane Lilac Festival has announced its Fab 14 candidates for the Royal Court, which will be selected Jan. 27 at the Bing Crosby Theater.

The festival will celebrate its diamond anniversary in 2013 with the theme “Lilac Legacy – Alive at 75.”

The Fab 14 were selected from a candidate pool from 29 high schools in Spokane County. This year’s candidates are: Sara Hyman of the Oaks Classical Christian Academy, Devyn Russell of Northwest Christian, Camiele Travis of North Central, Ashley Uhlenkott of Riverside, Jade Wong of Rogers, Quinne Evans of Shadle Park, Katie Heitkemper of Lewis and Clark, Savannah Sundeth of Mead, Emily Staker of Gonzaga Prep, Brett Rountree of Central Valley, Michelle Tatko of Ferris, Felicia Jackson of Freeman, Shelby Schafer of West Valley, and Hailey Hyde of Saint George’s.
