BNSF train derails near Deer Park

DEER PARK, Wash. (AP) — A rail line in northeastern Washington is closed after several empty cars of a train carrying diesel fuel derailed about 20 miles north of Spokane. There were no injuries or spills. Burlington Northern Santa Fe spokesman Gus Melonas says the derailment occurred Friday night in a remote area about two miles south of Deer Park. He says two locomotives on the Chewelah-bound train derailed, leaving one on its side and the other leaning. He says six empty box cars derailed but remained upright. Four of them folded like accordions. There’s no immediate word on a cause. Front-end loaders are working to get the undamaged cars back on track, and new rail ties will be brought in to replace damaged track. Melonas says the rail line is expected to be back in service by late Sunday or early Monday.
