University strolls past Mt. Spokane

Welcome back to the offense, Austin Flynn. University’s explosive receiver was full time at receiver Friday night – his broken hand no longer encumbered by a cast – and again showed why he is one of the Greater Spokane League’s most dangerous targets. Flynn caught two touchdown passes, one covering 58 yards, during the Titans’ five possession-five touchdown first half en route to a 38-14 football victory over visiting Mt. Spokane (1-6). The Titans (3-4) are 3 for 3 against fellow 3A schools and finish the season at home against 4A Ferris and 3A North Central. Friday’s game was over early. Quarterback Jeff Beaty threw first-quarter touchdown passes to Trevor Martin and Flynn. U-Hi scored three times in the second half, Beaty adding two more TD tosses, including the long pass to Flynn. By halftime, the Titans had 265 of their 399 yards of total offense and shut things down in the final two periods. Flynn broke his hand a month ago, had it wrapped in a “club” and still managed a couple of one-handed interceptions in subsequent games, but couldn’t go on offense. Against Mt. Spokane he had the use of both. “Actually, it’s still broken,” he said afterward. “There’s a big crack still in it, but I don’t feel it at all. It feels good.” U-Hi has struggled with turnovers or bogged down in the red zone, but had no such trouble Friday. Reducing mistakes was a point of emphasis during practice. Having Flynn back and helping provide additional offensive punch was “huge,” coach Rob Bartlett said. “Being able to have those two (Flynn and Trevor Martin) on the outside helps us a bunch. It’s a huge advantage.” Titans back Adrian Bonner rushed for 129 yards and Beaty threw for 137. Fill-in Wildcat quarterback Daniel Munoz gained 118 yards on the ground. U-Hi is part of a three-way tie for fifth in the overall GSL standings with Lewis and Clark and Shadle Park, the latter a team the Titans have defeated.
