Out & About: Skiers gear up at annual swaps


The Mt. Spokane Ski Patrol's Ski Swap has been outfitting skiers and boarders with bargain gear for more than 40 years while helping fund the patrol's volunteer staff.

OUTDEAL – Snow’s falling in the high country, a sure sign that used gear will be coming out of closets for great deals at annual ski- and winter-gear swaps.

The following fundraisers help raise money for area ski patrols:

49 Degrees North Ski Patrol Ski Swap, Northeast Washington Fairgrounds in Colville, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturday. Register items for sale 6 p.m.-8:30 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m.-9 p.m. Saturday.

Radical Reels travel to North Idaho

OUTRIDE – Radical Reels, the high-action, adrenaline-packed, offshoot flicks from the Banff Mountain Film Festival are coming to North Idaho this week, including a debut in Coeur d’Alene.

Shows are scheduled:

• Wednesday at the Kroc Center in Coeur d’Alene. Doors open 5 p.m.; films start at 6.

• Thursday at the Panida Theater in Sandpoint. Doors open 6 p.m.; films start at 7.

The 11 films on this year’s tour include skateboarding on bobsled courses, kayakers adventuring from Mexico to Iceland, speed climbing, BASE skiing and a humorous candid look at people using headcams.

Proceeds from the North Idaho Films, sponsored by Mountain Fever, will be donated to the Kroc Center and the Independence Ski Race Team.

Tickets are $13 in advance at shops in the Sandpoint and Coeur d’Alene areas; leftovers will be $15 at the door. Info: mountain-fever.com.

Orienteers to haunt Manito Park

OUTNAVIGATE – The Eastern Washington Orienteering Club will hold its annual Vampire O event Saturday at Manito Park. Search for control points by headlamp, but be on the lookout for “vampires” who can rob your points.

Sign-up begins at 6 p.m. Mass start at 6:30 p.m.

Don costumes, bring the kids and meet near Grand Avenue at 18th Street.
