HAYNES, James F. “Jim”
(Age 90)

Jim was born April 13, 1922 to Ernest and Amanda Haynes in Colby, Kansas.

One of seven children, four brothers: Al, Leo, Jack and Irvin; two sisters: Mabel and Vi.

The family relocated to the Hillyard neighborhood of Spokane when he was three years old.

He graduated from Rogers High School in 1940 and, after a short time with the Great Northern Railroad, enlisted in the Navy at the onset of WWII.

While in the Navy he served as a machinist in the submarine service during the war, assigned to the Pacific Ocean Fleet out of Hawaii.
Following the war Jim returned to Spokane and met and married in 1946, the love of his life, Margaret Mary Reilly “Peggy.”

Together they raised four children: Mary Shane, Terry Bray (Steve), Jimmy (deceased), Vicky Miller (John).

Jim and Peggy enjoyed 65 wonderful years until Peggy’s death in February 2012.
Jim went to work for the Spokane Police Department in 1946 and served over 32 years until his retirement in May, 1979.

He was an outstanding officer who rose through the ranks as a patrolman: Sergeant, Lieutenant and Deputy Chief, from late 1976 until his retirement in 1979.

Jim and Peggy loved to travel, especially to the Pacific Islands: Hawaii, Tahiti, Fiji.

Other trips included Ireland, England, Mexico and multiple locations in the US.

He was a long time member of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church and was a former member of The Knights of Columbus Degree Team.

Jim loved his family and was always offering a helping hand.

The Haynes home was always open and hosted annual Christmas and St. Patrick’s Day parties.
Jim is survived by his children, numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife Peggy and son Jimmy.

Visitation will be Saturday, October 20, from 12:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

A Vigil Service will be held Sunday, October 21 at 3:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday, October 22, at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, 34th Avenue and Perry Street.

Memorial contributions may be made in Jim’s name to Hospice of Spokane or Morning Star Boys Ranch.
