In brief: Seven seek fire commissioner seat

SPOKANE VALLEY – There are plenty of familiar names among the applicants for the vacant Spokane Valley Fire Department commissioner position, including two former Spokane Valley mayors and a former school superintendent.

The vacancy was created by the resignation of commissioner Monte Nesbitt. The four remaining commissioners will hold a special meeting at 3:30 p.m. on Nov. 30 to interview the seven candidates.

The seven applicants are: former Spokane Valley Mayor Mike DeVleming, former Central Valley School District superintendent Mike Pearson, business owner and Spokane Airport firefighter Chris Wetherell, former firefighter and civil service examiner Cynthia Walters, Spokane Valley Planning Commissioner John Carroll, former Spokane Valley Mayor Diana Wilhite and retired Spokane Valley firefighter Mark Normington.

McIntosh Grange hosting party

ROCKFORD – Ghosts and goblins are invited to a frightfully fun night at the McIntosh Grange Hall, 319 S. First St., for the annual Halloween Kids Party on Wednesday, from 5:30 to 8 p.m.

Children can play games, win prizes on the cake walk and enjoy Halloween treats. Visitors are welcome to wear their favorite costume, too.

The event is free. Donations will be accepted.

Dentist offering cash for candy

LIBERTY LAKE – Local children once again will be able to earn cash for their trick-or-treating efforts at the KiDDS Dental annual Great Candy Buy Back at Dr. Jared Evans office, 1327 N. Stanford Lane, Suite B, on Thursday, from 4 to 7 p.m.

Trick-or-treaters will receive $1 per pound for their unopened Halloween candy. The collected candy will be shipped to troops overseas in holiday care packages.

North Palouse food bank sets hours

FAIRFIELD – The hours for the North Palouse Community Food Bank in Fairfield will be open from 9 to 11 a.m. today. The hours for November and December will be 9 to 11 a.m. Nov. 10, Nov. 24, Dec. 8 and Dec. 29. It will also be open 4 to 6 p.m. on Nov. 15 and Dec. 20.

The food bank is supported entirely by community donations and serves Fairfield, Rockford, Latah and Waverly. It is located behind the Fairfield Fire Station on North Railroad Street. Those with emergency food needs can call (509) 283-4250.
