Obituary: Materne, Frank William “Lucky”

Passed away on October 24, 2012 in Spokane, WA.
He was born on October 18, 1926 in Spokane, WA to William and Francina Materne.
He joined the U.S. Navy in the fall of 1943, and on November 4th, 1944 he was commisioned onto the U.S.S.
Menifee with a position as a Radioman.
Frank loved the military life, and he reenlisted numerous times, also serving in the Washington Army National Guard, where he eventually retired in August of 1985.
Frank loved to dance, play in dart leagues and was a wonder to watch on the pool table.
He enjoyed listening to music and being with his family.
While ‘Lucky’ never had children of his own, when he married Carol he said “I’m not just gaining a wife, but also three beautiful daughters.”
Frank is survived by his wife, Carol Materne, daughters Linda Van Sweringer, Kimberly Van Sweringer and Tami Van Sweringer; numerous grandchildren; six nephews and one niece; one sister; one sister-in-law and numerous extended family.
He was preceded in death by two brothers.
Frank was a kind, loving and spirited soul.
Always with a story and a twinkle in his eye.
He was dearly loved and will be missed by many.
The family would also like to express our thanks to the wonderful staff at both Sacred Heart Hospital and The Spokane Veterans Hospital.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, November 3, 2012 from 1:00 to 4:00 pm at the VFW Post 51, 300 W. Mission Ave., Spokane.
A private inurnment will be held at the Washington Veterans Cemetery at a later date.
