League mum on governor’s race

Ed reform group won’t back either

Associated Press

SEATTLE – A prominent Washington education reform group has decided to not endorse a candidate for governor.

The League of Education Voters announced Thursday that both Attorney General Rob McKenna and former congressman Jay Inslee have good ideas for improving education in Washington state, but neither has come up with a credible plan for paying for those improvements.

The group commends McKenna’s detailed plan, including an emphasis on early learning, but said McKenna depends too much on growth in the state’s economy and a cap on spending for other state expenses.

The league said Inslee’s education plan has improved since the beginning of his campaign, but he also depends too much on the economy. The group also doesn’t like Inslee’s opposition to charter schools.
