Help the least of them

Mitt Romney’s quote, “It’s not my job to worry about those people,” was only referring to “those people” who are insufficiently taxed. Since I pay some federal income tax, and many other taxes, I thought he couldn’t be talking about me.

But due to my conservative Republican upbringing, I knew exactly who “those people” were. When you buy into the belief of political, financial and spiritual superiority, it is easy to separate the deserving from “those people.” They never made anything of themselves, and are dependent on the rest of us.

Substitute deserve for entitled and Romney’s condemnation of those “who believe they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you name it” is clear.

I prefer another sentiment, “For I was hungry, and you gave me bread; I was thirsty, and you gave me drink; I was a stranger, and you invited me in; naked, and you clothed me; I was sick, and you visited me; I was in prison, and you came to me … Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it to one of these brothers of mine, even the least of them, you did it to me.”
