Smith hurls Gonzaga past Portland

Kenny Smith limited Portland to one run on seven hits in a season-high seven innings as Gonzaga completed a West Coast Conference baseball sweep of the Pilots with a 2-1 victory on Monday in Portland.

Marco Gonzales made his first relief appearance for GU, collecting his first save with two scoreless innings.

It was the ninth straight win over Portland (12-20, 4-5 WCC) for the Zags (20-10-1, 8-4), who moved into a first-place tie.

GU manufactured its runs early in the game. Travis Forbes had a sacrifice fly to produce a run in the second inning, and the Zags got the winning run as Cory LeBrun grounded into a fielder’s choice in the third.

• WSU sophomore Scott Simon (Central Valley) is the Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week.

Simon struck out a career-high seven in a five-hit, 5-0 win over Utah on Sunday, the first shutout by a Cougars pitcher since 1999.
