Colquitt adjusts to atypical attention

Britton Colquitt spent close to an hour with his wife and their 1-year-old son in one of the corporate tents at the Denver Broncos headquarters following practice Monday.

The NFL’s new highest-paid punter swears he wasn’t being a snob. He just didn’t realize he was keeping a throng of media members waiting for him at the podium.

It’s not every day that punters get this kind of attention – or make this kind of money.

Colquitt became the league’s highest-paid punter when he signed his three-year, $11.7 million extension upon arriving to work Monday.

The deal included a $3 million signing bonus that, when added to this year’s $1.275 million salary, also makes him the NFL’s highest-compensated punter in 2013.

Holmes unsure of return

New York Jets wide receiver Santonio Holmes says he is “getting better” but not sure when he’ll be able to play as he rehabilitates a foot injury that’s sidelined him since early last season.

Holmes, on the physically unable to perform list, says he’s looking at his return to the football field on a “day to day” basis. However, the doctors say it’s “week to week.” Holmes has been doing some light jogging and using an anti-gravity treadmill to reduce pressure on the foot.

No preseason for RGIII

Washington Redskins coach Mike Shanahan says there’s “no possibility” Robert Griffin III will play in the preseason, rebuffing the quarterback’s public lobbying effort from earlier in the day.

The coach said the plan is for Griffin to play in Week 1, but it won’t happen if there’s a setback involving Griffin’s knee.

Kolb back at practice

Kevin Kolb has returned to practice for the first time since hurting his left knee and says he’s ready to compete with rookie EJ Manuel for the starting quarterback job with the Buffalo Bills.

Kolb, however, acknowledged that he has plenty of catching up to do and is still experiencing soreness. Despite being cleared for practice, he says it’s too early to determine whether he’ll be cleared to play in Buffalo’s preseason game against Minnesota on Friday.
