In brief: Replica of memorial honors war veterans

The Wall That Heals, a traveling replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., arrives in Kootenai County this morning for a three-day display beginning Friday.

It will be at Hayden City Park along with the Global War on Terror Wall of Remembrance.

An opening ceremony for the displays is set for 10 a.m. Friday, and the walls will remain open for free viewing around the clock through Sunday.

Hundreds of veterans on motorcycles will escort the displays into Hayden this morning around 10. The procession, which could take up to an hour, will begin at Greyhound Park in Post Falls and travel east on Interstate 90 to Coeur d’Alene, north on U.S. 95, east on Prairie Avenue and north on Wayne Drive.

Cross streets on Highway 95 between I-90 and Prairie will be temporarily blocked as the procession passes.

Hayden City Park is on Honeysuckle Avenue east of Government Way.

Students will get email, Web access

Spokane Public Schools’ fourth- through 12th-graders will all have email accounts and limited Web access starting this fall.

The email accounts will be used to share school information, send class assignments and help high school students with college preparation, school officials said.

The effort to provide access began last year with the primary goal of allowing high school students to receive information about college entrance exams and send college applications.

After making sure safety precautions were in place, the district leadership decided to expand the email access. Fourth- through seventh-graders’ access will be restricted to communicate with teachers and other district staff. Eighth- through 12th-graders will have unrestricted access with parent or guardian permission.

Fire blocks highway on all traffic lanes

A brush fire near the Spokane-Stevens county line fully blocked state Route 291, also known as Nine Mile Road, Tuesday.

The fire, 6 miles northwest of Spokane, was reported about 2:45 p.m. The Washington State Patrol was called to assist with traffic, and all lanes were blocked for firefighting efforts. A state Transportation Department spokesman said Tuesday night the road would be closed through Wednesday morning.

Homicide suspect pleads not guilty

A man already facing 15 years in federal prison pleaded not guilty Tuesday to first-degree attempted murder and a separate case of kidnapping.

Danial J. Dublin, who is also listed as Daniel J. Dublin, pleaded not guilty before Superior Court Judge James Triplet.

Dublin, who has a history of gun-related violence, was sentenced last month to 15 ½ years in prison for illegal possession of a firearm.

Dublin was arrested after witnesses implicated him and Philip J. Ruiz in a double shooting Jan. 12.

Dublin is also a suspect in a 2012 case where a woman claimed she was kidnapped in Spokane and dumped in the woods near Springdale, Wash., as two men fired shots at her.

Deputy Spokane County Prosecutor Mark Cipolla said a conviction in either case would trigger the state’s three-strikes law and Dublin would be sent to prison for life without possibility of parole.
