In brief: Emtman voted into state Hall of Fame

From News Services

Former Cheney High School and University of Washington defensive lineman Steve Emtman has been voted into the State of Washington Sports Hall of Fame.

Induction ceremonies are scheduled for Saturday at Safeco Field. Emtman will be inducted along with sports promoter Bob Walsh.

Emtman is considered one of the best defensive linemen in college football history. The Washington Husky from Cheney was a two-time All-American and for the 1991 season he won the Outland Trophy, the Lombardi Award and was UPI Lineman of the Year.

Emtman was the No. 1 overall pick in the 1992 draft but was hampered by injuries during his six-year pro career with Indianapolis, Washington and Miami.

Walsh arrived in Seattle in 1973 as Bill Russell’s choice to be assistant general manager of the Sonics. He is best known as a promoter and his signature achievement was bringing the 1990 Goodwill Games to Seattle and Tacoma.

Colleges

The Idaho volleyball team is making a habit of excelling in the classroom as well as on the court, and the Vandals were recognized recently as a recipient of the American Volleyball Coaches Association’s Team Academic Award for the third consecutive year.

The award recognizes teams that maintained at least a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average on a 4.0 scale during the 2012-13 academic year.

Idaho is one of just two teams from the 2012-13 Western Athletic Conference to receive the honor, along with Denver. In all, 130 of the 330 NCAA Division I teams earned the recognition.

• Washington State women’s rowers Mihaela-Teodora ‘Teo’ Berindei (Romania), Ieva Adomaviciute (Lithuania) and Nicole Hare (Canada), along with assistant coach Josh Adam (United States), participated in the 2013 World Rowing Under-23 Championships at Linz-Ottenshelm, Austria.

Incoming freshman Berindei rowed in the quadruple sculls, with her crew edging Poland for the gold medal.

Sophomore Adomaviciute competed in the singles sculls, winning the ‘C’ Final to place 13th overall.

Hare, a sophomore, placed fifth with her crew in the eight.

Adam, who is entering his fourth year as a Cougar assistant, coached the U.S. double sculls and quadruple sculls. He took seventh and sixth, respectively.

Rian Oliver has been promoted to assistant athletic director for compliance, Gonzaga University athletic director Mike Roth announced Thursday.

Oliver served the past seven years as the Bulldogs’ basketball academic coordinator for both the men’s and women’s teams.
