UW men’s soccer team advances to quarters

Ian Lange scored off a flip throw from Michael Harris and Washington defeated Stanford on Sunday in Seattle in the NCAA soccer tournament round of 16.

Lange’s goal came on a header at 84:36. Ryan Herman posted the shutout over the Cardinal (11-7-4) with two saves.

The second-seeded Huskies (16-1-4) advance to the quarterfinals to face seventh-seeded New Mexico on Saturday at Husky Soccer Stadium at 5 p.m.

Volleyball

A conference-record nine Pac-12 teams earned bids into the NCAA women’s volleyball championships. Getting top-16 seeds were No. 4 Washington, No. 6 USC and No. 7 Stanford. The other Pac-12 teams in the tournament are Arizona, Arizona State, Cal, Colorado, Oregon and Utah.

Men’s basketball

Colorado College dumped Whitworth for the second time in eight days, 81-65 at the Tiger’s Thanksgiving Invitational in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Chris Lesnansky scored 25 points to lead Colorado.

Colton McGargar scored 17 points for Whitworth (3-2), which fell to the Tigers (4-0) in a 65-60 loss at Whitworth.

The Pirates shot just 32.7 percent to the Tigers’ 51 percent. Colorado led 40-28 at halftime. The Pirates got within six points in the second half.

• North Idaho College (8-2) endured a barrage of 3-pointers from Blue Mountain as the Cardinals defeated the Timberwolves 89-70 at NIC.

Blue Mountain (0-7) threw up 38 3-point attempts, making 14. But NIC dominated from the field overall, shooting 52.6 percent to the Timberwolves’ 34.9. The Cardinals also made 27 of 36 free-throw attempts to Blue Mountain’s 12 of 18.

Bryce Leavitt scored 19 points and grabbed nine rebounds for NIC. Braxton Tucker also scored 19 points with Will Dorsey adding 18 and Shikei Blake 11.

• Mt. Hood (3-1) took advantage of a huge advantage at the free-throw line to defeat CC Spokane 76-69 in the fourth-place game at the Red Devil Classic in Longview, Wash.

The Saints made 23 of 36 free throws while the Sasquatch (2-2) only went to the line eight times, making five. Mt. Hood dominated the boards 42-21 with Mac Johnson grabbing 16 rebounds along with scoring 23 points.

Spokane’s Kwinn Hanson scored 21 points before fouling out. Sam Druffel added 18 points and Chase Haack 16. TJ Bracey had seven assists.

Hockey

The host Castlegar (B.C.) Rebels (14-10-1-3) outscored the Spokane Braves 7-5 in a KIJHL game.

Adam Shaner’s goal for the Braves (8-17-0-3) early in the third period tied the game at 5 before the Rebels scored twice on their way to the win.

Justin Bonanno, Dillon Bogart, Tanner Stolz and Kurtis Redding also scored for the Braves.
