East Valley topples Freeman with second-half surge

Elle Burland and Skylar Bastin scored 11 points apiece as East Valley regained control in the second half and kept its perfect record intact with a 50-42 nonleague win Tuesday at Freeman.

The Knights outscored the Scotties 14-9 in the first quarter, but Freeman cut the deficit to one at half. East Valley’s defense, which held the Scotties to five third-quarter points, helped the Knights regain momentum.

Katie Vold led the Scotties with 17 points, seven rebounds and three steals.

The Knights (3-0) will play at North Central on Saturday. Freeman (0-1) is at Newport on Friday.

Northwest Christian 57, Lake City 51: Chanel Knight scored 14 points and Courtney Gray added 11 points and 12 rebounds as the Crusaders (3-0) upset the visiting Timberwolves (4-1).

Northwest Christian outscored Lake City 35-28 in the second half.

Post Falls 52, Kennewick 49: Shayna Allert had 19 points, five rebounds and five steals as the Trojans (3-3) held off the Lions’ fourth-quarter surge and won in Kennewick. The Lions’ Jalyn Brashear-Norwood led all scorers with 20 points.

West Valley 70, Lakeland 34: The Eagles (3-0) forced 30 turnovers and cruised past the visiting Hawks (3-5). Natalie Noble scored 19 points and Erin Higbie added 14 for West Valley. Both players combined for 16 points in a third-quarter rally that extended the Eagles’ lead to 27 heading into the final quarter.

Kaiden Kelsey tallied a team-high 11 points for the Hawks.

Lewiston 56, Clarkston 44: The Bengals (4-0) dominated the first three quarters and cruised past the visiting Bantams (1-2). Emilee Schlader led Lewiston with 11 points and Brett Hastings added 10. Only Jaclyn Meyers, who scored 11 points, reached double figures for Clarkston.

Chewelah 47, Deer Park 20: The Cougars (1-3) shined on the defensive end after halftime and eased past the Stags (0-3) in Deer Park. Chewelah held an 18-15 advantage at the half, but outscored the Stags 29-5 in the second half. The Cougars had eight blocks and controlled the boards throughout.

Kara Fredrick led the Chewelah with 14 points and Kaitlin Krouse added 10. Deer Park was led by Siera English, who scored eight points, and Zoey Mohr, who added six.

Cheney 53, Reardan 39: Kendyl Cone led four players in double figures with 13 points as the Blackhawks (1-2) downed the Indians (1-2) in Reardan. Katie McGourin added 12 points for Cheney. Reardan committed 20 turnovers, with 10 in the first quarter.

Riverside 51, Springdale 35: Marisa and Hayley Pace combined for 28 points and the Rams (2-0) topped the host Chargers (1-4). Brittney Beckman led Springdale with 10 points.

Newport 51, Priest River 38: Holly Malsbury scored 24 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and added five steals to guide the Grizzlies (3-0) past the visiting Spartans (1-3). Newport’s Hadley Stratton scored all 12 of her points in the second half. The Grizzlies trailed 22-21 entering the second half before outscoring Priest River 14-2 in the third. Karly Douglas led the Spartans with 12 points.

Medical Lake 48, Royal 25: Cassidy Hagel filled up the stat sheet for the Cardinals (2-1), posting 13 points, seven rebounds, five steals and three assists as Medical Lake topped the Knights in Royal City.

Lakeside 58, St. George’s 21: The host Eagles (2-0) locked down and eased past the Dragons (2-2) in Nine Mile Falls. Jocelyn Cook-Cox scored 12 points and Kelsey Jones added 12 points and nine rebounds for Lakeside. St. George’s committed 31 turnovers and was held to 19 percent shooting from the field.

Tekoa-Oakesdale 47, Asotin 42: The Nighthawks’ Kim Grooms hit a tying basket in the final minute of regulation and Tekoa-Oakesdale (1-0) surged in overtime to beat the visiting Panthers.

Three Asotin players fouled out in overtime. Mattie Joe Johnson led the Nighthawks with 17 points. Brielle Whittaker had 15 for the Panthers.

Liberty 61, Valley Christian 11: Aly Tee scored 18 points as the Lancers (1-3) rolled to a victory over the visiting Panthers (0-3). Liberty’s Madelynne Flaig added 14 points and freshman Christine Denny added 11. The Lancers held Valley Christian scoreless in the first and fourth quarters.

Bonners Ferry 36, Libby 29: The Badgers (1-2) recovered after falling behind 11-0 to start the game and beat visiting Libby. Kaley Piatz had nine points and eight rebounds for Bonners Ferry. Devon Gallagher tallied a game-high 15 points for Libby.

Kettle Falls 54, Selkirk 41: Makayla Hall scored 16 points and Kourtney Keenan added 11 as the Bulldogs (3-0) gained control early and held on late for a win over the visiting Rangers (0-2). Selkirk’s Katie Couch led all scorers with 19 points.

Wilbur-Creston 61, Davenport 54: Jessica Boyer scored 23 of her game-high 27 points in the first half as the Wildcats (3-0) topped the host Gorillas (1-2). Allison Johnson had 20 points for Davenport.

Cusick 52, Clark Fork 33: Malene Andrews led the Panthers with 14 points and finished just shy of a double-double with nine rebounds as the Panthers (2-0) topped the visiting Wampus Cats (1-1). Cusick held a 42-33 advantage in rebounds. Lyndsie Kiebert led Clark Fork with 13 points.

Republic 51, Oroville 36: Sierra McQuay had 12 points and 12 rebounds as the Tigers (2-0) topped the host Hornets. Shania Graham added 17 points, nine rebounds, and eight assists for Republic.

The Tigers outscored Oroville 15-2 in the third quarter to put the game away. The Hornets were led by Lilly Hildebrand’s 14 points.

Okanogan 66, Almira/Coulee-Hartline 21: The Bulldogs raced out to a 28-2 first-quarter lead and eased past the Warriors (0-3) at Coulee City. Jordan Boesel scored 13 points for Okanogan. Reinnee Rockett led Almira/Coulee-Hartline with nine points.

Coeur d’Alene Charter 39, Wallace 36: In a defensive battle, Anna Verheage was instrumental with five steals, and a full-court press defense in the third quarter allowed the Panthers (2-2) to secure a victory over the visiting Miners (4-2). Verheage finished with 12 points. Wallace was led by Jordan Browning, who scored 14.

Lakeside 42, Kootenai 39: Cailyn Dohrman scored 12 points and Kim Duncan and Avery Brown-Saonders each chipped in 10 as the Knights (3-2, 1-0) held on in the second half to defeat the Warriors (1-2, 0-1) in Harrison. Kootenai’s Katey Mae McInturff led all scorers with 23 points.
