In brief: School shooting victim stabilizes
CENTENNIAL, Colo. – Colorado’s governor asked the nation Sunday for prayers for the 17-year-old girl who was critically wounded by a classmate at her suburban Denver high school.
Gov. John Hickenlooper also credited security procedures adopted after the 1999 massacre at nearby Columbine High School for helping put a quick end to the Arapahoe High School shooting by Karl Pierson, an 18-year-old student who shot Claire Davis at point-blank range before killing himself.
“We all have to keep Claire in our thoughts and prayers,” he told CBS’ “Face the Nation.”
Davis was in critical condition and stable Sunday.
Arapahoe County Sheriff Grayson Robinson has said investigators think she was shot at random by Pierson, who had gone into the school looking for a teacher with whom he had a dispute.
Tippers leaving up to $10,000
NEW YORK – The $111.05 New York restaurant receipt includes a $1,000 tip and the words “god bless!” scrawled across it.
The handle @tipsforjesus is stamped next to an illegible signature.
In recent weeks, similar tabs have popped up in restaurants from coast to coast and even in Mexico, with tips of as much as $10,000 – all charged to American Express.
So who’s the anonymous tipster leaving a trail of generosity across the continent?
Tips for Jesus – an Instagram account filled with photos documenting the tips – has more than 50,000 followers. The account displays photos of smiling servers holding receipts with outlandish gratuities on bills also tallied in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Phoenix and Ann Arbor, Mich.
The Instagram feed comes with the tagline, “Doing the Lord’s work, one tip at a time.”
New husband killed helping motorist
CHICAGO – A man married less than seven hours was killed along with a stranded motorist he stopped to help in the snow when they were struck by several vehicles, authorities say.
William “Riley” Knight, 49, of Crown Point, Ind., was driving with his wife, Nikki, about 11:45 p.m. Saturday when they saw a woman who had slid off the road in the snow near Crown Point.
Knight and the stranded woman were standing by the side of the road when they were struck by one vehicle, and then two more, the Lake County sheriff’s office said.
They were pronounced dead at the scene early Sunday.
