Pullman wins GNL opener

Leading by eight at the half, Pullman broke open the game by outscoring host West Valley by 10 points in the third period to take a 63-50 victory in a Great Northern League boys basketball opener on Thursday night.

West Valley (7-2, 0-1) got within nine points with two minutes left in the game but no closer as the Greyhounds (9-0, 1-0) hit their free throws down the stretch.

Corey Langerveld scored 23 points and Race Martin 14 for Pullman.

West Valley was led by Jake Love with 19 points and 10 rebounds.

Cheney 55, Deer Park 52: Alex Berman’s two free throws sealed the victory for the Blackhawks against the Stags at Cheney.

Eric Igbinoba and HD Wyborney scored 14 points apiece for Cheney (5-3, 1-0).

Reese Ferguson and Caleb Guske had 17 each for Deer Park (4-5, 0-1).

The game was tied entering the final quarter.

Nonleague

Moscow 67, Priest River 22: After a close first quarter, the Bears (3-4) took off to the victory over the host Spartans (5-5).

Nick Ellison scored 14 points and Kellen Martin 10 for Moscow.

Odessa-Harrington 64, Liberty 56: Justin Hunt scored 26 points to lead the host Titans (6-4) past the Lancers (6-5). Stetson Sanford added 15 points.

Match Burnham scored 17 points and Zack Kunkel for the Lancers.

Girls Great Northern

Cheney 60, Deer Park 19: The Blackhawks (3-4, 1-0) took off to a 21-4 lead in the first quarter and cruised to the victory over the visiting Stags (0-9, 0-1) in a league opener.

Samantha Sheffles scored 19 points, Coreen Labish 14 and Chae Brown 12 for Cheney.

West Valley 56, Pullman 46: Erin Higbig collected 19 rebounds to go along with her game-high 15 points to lead the Eagles (5-4, 1-0) past the visiting Greyhounds (4-5, 0-1).

Aaliyah Ashley-Meek made four of her six 3-point attempts to add 12 points for West Valley.

Nonleague

Post Falls 70, Colville 27: Shayna Allert scored 15 points and Brooke Litalien 13 to lead the undefeated Trojans (15-0) past the host Indians (4-4).

Post Falls led 36-10 at the half.

Northwest Christian 45, Lakeland 30: Despite throwing up a zero in the second quarter, the Crusaders (9-1) posted a 15-point triumph over the host Hawks (1-11) in Rathdrum.

Trailing by four at the half, the Crusaders outscored the Hawks 12-2 in the third quarter to take back the lead they originally had built in the opening quarter.

Courtney Gray scored 17 points to lead NWC.

Lakeland was hurt by 18 turnovers, 14 in the second half.

Liberty 31, Odessa-Harrington 25: Maggie Nelson scored 12 points as the Lancers (2-9), tied at the half, overcame the host Titans (2-8).

Chelsea Fisher scored 12 points to go along with 14 rebounds.
