Cougars go to 9-0 in NEA

Derek Smith had 20 points, five assists and five steals and Chewelah stayed perfect in Northeast A League boys basketball with a 66-61 win over Lakeside Saturday night in Chewelah.

The Cougars took a 10-point lead into the fourth quarter and then held off the Eagles’ late charge.

Ben Johnstone had 12 points, Brandon Smith added 10 points and six assists and Caleb Wiebe pulled down 10 rebounds for Chewelah (13-3, 9-0).

Conner Moffatt led four Lakeside players in double figures with 19 points.

The Cougars beat the Eagles (6-10, 5-3) by nine points in the teams’ first meeting on Dec. 21.

Newport 69, Kettle Falls 40: Jeron Konkright scored 27 of his game-high 33 points in the first half as the Grizzlies (6-11, 3-6) overwhelmed the host Bulldogs (6-10, 1-8). Alex Young added 13 points for Newport, which led 27-2 after the first quarter.

Medical Lake 54, Freeman 37: Austin Garza scored 15 points and the Cardinals (11-5, 8-1) pulled away in the fourth quarter and beat the host Scotties (2-14, 2-6). Medical Lake outscored Freeman 19-10 in the fourth to put the game away. Jack Paukert scored 10 points and Peyton Smetana added nine points and nine boards for the Scotties.

Inland Empire 5A

Post Falls 48, Lewiston 45: Max McCullough scored 14 points to guide the Trojans (6-9, 1-2) past the host Bengals (2-13, 0-3). Jayden Rayner tallied a team-high 22 points for Lewiston.

Intermountain

Bonners Ferry 49, Kellogg 46 (2OT): Garrett Skeen’s steal and Cameron Fitch’s two free throws late in double overtime helped the Badgers (5-7, 1-1) slide past the visiting Wildcats (9-5, 2-2). Cameron Woods scored 13 points and Ryan Farrens added 10 for Bonners Ferry. Kellogg was led by Garret Wendt’s 12 points.

Timberlake 75, Priest River 62: Keegan Scott scored 20 points and Johnny Hayden added 17 points and seven rebounds as the Tigers (11-2, 3-0) beat the Spartans (6-8, 0-3) at Spirit Lake. Dalton Sommer and Coleton Stelow scored 14 points apiece for Priest River, which couldn’t recover after falling behind 42-28 in the first half.

Great Northern

Pullman 83, West Valley 59: Corey Langerveld hit 10 of 19 shots and finished with 23 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and three blocks as the Greyhounds (15-1, 7-0) walloped the visiting Eagles (10-5, 3-4). Hunter Wells tallied a team-high 21 points for West Valley, which trailed by 22 points at halftime.

Cheney 63, Deer Park 41: H.D. Wyborney scored 17 of his game-high 23 points in the decisive second quarter and the Blackhawks (8-6, 4-3) routed the visiting Stags (4-11, 0-7). Eric Igbinoba added 13 points for Cheney, which outscored Deer Park 24-9 in the second to erase an early deficit. Deer Park was led by Nathaniel Guske’s 12 points.

Clarkston 52, East Valley 45: The Bantams (11-4, 5-2) went on an 18-0 run after falling behind 12-2 to start the game and held on late for a win over the visiting Knights (7-8, 3-4). Trevor Sperry scored 17 points and DePaul Blunt added 12 for Clarkston. East Valley was led by James Brown’s 25 points.

Northeast 2B

St. George’s 57, Springdale 25: Dexter Sienko scored 16 points and Erik Muelheims added 13 as the Dragons (17-1, 12-0) forced 30 turnovers and raced past the visiting Chargers (0-18, 0-12). St. George’s led 38-14 at halftime.

Colfax 64, Liberty 46: Brandon Gfeller had 29 points and the Bulldogs (14-4, 9-3) defeated the host Lancers (9-9, 5-7). Kasey Johnson added 15 points and Brady Ellis added 10 for Colfax. Liberty was led by Ryan Thayer’s 19 points.

Northwest Christian 65, Reardan 31: Matt Kershinar led a balanced scoring attack with 14 points and the Crusaders (13-5, 8-4) routed the visiting Indians (5-13, 3-9). Jonathan Morris added 10 points for Northwest Christian.

Northeast 1B North

Northport 53, Columbia 52 (OT): Dylan Masters scored all seven of the Mustangs points in overtime and Northport (9-6, 5-5) held on to beat the Lions (0-16, 0-11) in Hunters. Jeremiah Johnson scored 13 points and Carl Case and Masters added 12 apiece for the Mustangs. Columbia was led by Dustin Wyborney and Joseph Foster, who combined for 34 points.

Selkirk 46, Curlew 29: Cole Dawson scored 14 points and Dominic Cain and Avery Miller added 10 apiece as the Rangers (12-3, 9-1) defeated the host Cougars (6-8, 4-5). Aaron McCullough led Curlew with 12 points.

Cusick 64, Republic 27: Alec Bluff scored 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and Chad Browneagle added eight points and six steals as the Panthers (14-2, 10-0) dumped the visiting Tigers (7-8, 4-4).

Northeast 1B South

Almira/Coulee-Hartline 74, Wellpinit 65 (OT): Thunder Wellhausen scored seven of his game-high 23 points in overtime and the Warriors (9-6, 5-2) beat the visiting Redskins (12-5, 5-2). ACH trailed by seven points with around four minutes left in regulation and chipped away to eventually send the game into overtime. Brodie Ford tallied a team-high 17 points for Wellpinit. The win pulled ACH into a three-way tie for first place with Wellpinit and Odessa-Harrington.

Odessa-Harrington 53, Valley Christian 45: Justin Hunt scored 16 points and Cade Weber added 10 points and eight assists as the Titans (11-6, 5-2) gained control in the second half and beat the visiting Panthers (7-8, 3-4). Odessa-Harrington outscored Valley Christian 35-24 in the second half to erase a three-point halftime deficit.

Wilbur-Creston 51, St. Michael’s 46: Colton Magers scored 11 of his career-high 21 points in the third quarter and the Wildcats (9-8, 3-4) held on late to beat the visiting Warriors (1-15, 0-7). Nick Densley added eight points and 13 rebounds for Wilbur-Creston. Gabe Durazo scored 28 points for St. Michael’s.

Southeast 1B

Garfield-Palouse 55, LaCrosse-Washtucna 42: The Vikings (13-3, 10-2) opened the game on a 19-2 run and went on to beat the visiting Tigercats (13-3, 9-3). Tyler Thurman scored 18 points and Jesse Lopez added seven points, eight rebounds and four steals for Garfield-Palouse. Justin Wargo tallied a team-high 21 points for LaCrosse-Washtucna.

Pomeroy 58, Rosalia 52 (OT): Tanner Feider led three players in double figures with 13 points and the Pirates (12-3, 9-2) took charge in overtime and beat the host Spartans (9-7, 7-5). Craig Nelson scored 17 points to lead Rosalia.

Colton 70, Liberty Christian 52: Jake Straughan scored 30 points and Dalton Patchen added 23 as the Wildcats (10-6, 8-3) pulled away in the second half and beat the Patriots (3-8, 3-8) in Richland.

North Star

Lakeside 64, Kootenai 59 (OT): The Knights (5-8, 2-0) connected on enough free throws in overtime to edge the Warriors (5-6, 2-2) in Harrison. Doug Schatz scored 20 points for Lakeside.
