Indians score two in ninth to top Boise

BOISE – Unlike the series opener against Boise on Friday, a contingent of Spokane Indians’ pitchers – led by starter Collin Wiles – held the Hawks’ bats at bay on Saturday. Wiles pitched five innings of shutout baseball and Spokane (22-21, 2-3 second half) did just enough offensively to top Boise 3-1 in the second game of a five-game Northwest Conference series at Memorial Stadium. Wiles, who allowed four hits and a walk, hasn’t allowed more than four runs in any of his eight starts this season. He lowered his earned-run average to 3.55. Joe Jackson gave the Indians an early advantage with a two-out single in the first that scored Chris Garia, who led off the game with an infield single. Spokane reliever Abel De Los Santos, who came on in the sixth, gave up a sacrifice fly to Jacob Rogers to knot the game at 1. The Indians rallied in the ninth with two runs. With one out, Marcus Greene walked, then Cam Schiller singled to left. A wild pitched moved the runners up a base. The Hawks (23-20, 2-3) intentionally walked Brandon Garcia. After a Saquan Johnson strikeout, Janluis Castro hit a two-run single to center. Spokane’s Justin Sprenger earned his first win of the season by holding the Hawks scoreless in the final two innings. The Indians, who fell 9-1 to Boise on Friday, improved to 15-11 in July and have won two of their last three.
