27-year-old killed in drive-by shooting on N. Atlantic

One man is dead after a drive-by shooting on the 7000 block of N. Atlantic St. in Spokane, according to the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office. The shooter is still at large and is considered armed and dangerous. Fabian McBride, 27, was shot outside his North Spokane home shortly before 1 p.m., according to family members and witnesses. Law enforcement identified Issiah L. Schauman as the suspect. He was seen driving a gray or silver 1986 Chrysler New Yorker with Washington plates with the number AEE5144. He is about 5-feet-8-inches, 150 pounds and light skinned. Jon Hamilton, a witness at the scene who lives nearby, said he saw the suspect pull up to McBride, who approached the driver in the street. There was a confrontation between the two, and the man in the car pointed a “large handgun” at McBride and shot four times, Hamilton said. Three of the shots hit McBride in the chest, he said. The suspect then sped off southbound down Atlantic. Hamilton walked toward McBride to help, but was asked to stay back by family members. “When I got down there, I realized that there was people huddled and I knew there was a guy down,” Hamilton said. “They were holding pressure on his wounds and stuff to revive him.” The suspect is still at large, Deputy Mark Gregory said. The incident does not appear to be random.

Witness Jon Hamilton says the shooting happened near the yellow apartments pictured. (Photo: Kaitlin Gillespie) McBride was unmarried and had four children, his cousin Marcus Andrews said. Andrews said he doesn’t know the motivation for the shooting, but doesn’t think his cousin had enemies who would want to kill McBride. “A lot of people loved him,” Andrews said. “He was like anyone else in Spokane. He’s a family man.” Hamilton said the neighborhood is usually quiet, but neighbors have told him to avoid the apartments where McBride was shot, calling it dangerous. “It scared me, actually, because I got a grandson and I’m thinking would somebody drive by and shoot him?” Hamilton said.
