More awards for Gonzales

Baseball: The accolades continue to pile up for Gonzaga University baseball junior Marco Gonzales who was tabbed an All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, Baseball America and Perfect Game the organizations announced Thursday. 

Gonzales was recognized as a second-team recipient by all three publications.The Fort Collins, Colo., native is coming off a season that saw him selected 19th overall in Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft by the St. Louis Cardinals.

Gonzales finished the season with a 7-3 record and a 2.80 ERA in 106 innings. At the plate the Co-West Coast Conference Player of the Year hit .313, with two home runs and 26 RBIs.

Penguins extend Malkin

Hockey: The Pittsburgh Penguins and reigning NHL MVP Evgeni Malkin have agreed to an eight-year contract extension.

The $76-million deal begins with the 2014-15 season and will carry an average salary cap hit of $9.5 million. The agreement comes one day after the Penguins signed coach Dan Bylsma to a two-year extension through 2016.

The 26-year-old Russian won the Hart Trophy as the NHL’s MVP a year ago after leading the league with 109 points. He struggled with a concussion and a shoulder injury during the 2013 season, finishing with 31 points in 33 games.

Hoopfest court monitors needed

Hoopfest: Court monitors are still needed for Hoopfest, the largest 3-on-3 basketball tournament in the world.

Organizers are still looking for about 120 volunteers for the June 29-30 event in downtown Spokane. Monitors receive a package of Nike gear, including shoes. Sign-up at spokanehoopfest.net.
