In brief: HUB offering pickleball clinic

SPOKANE VALLEY – The HUB Sports Center, 19619 E. Cataldo Ave., is offering a beginners pickleball clinic starting June 2.

The clinic is $5 and includes an hour of lessons from 3 to 4 p.m. and open pickleball from 4 to 6 p.m.

If you would just like to play, open pickleball is $2 for drop-in play from 4 to 6 p.m.

New students should bring a notepad.

U-Hi nominated for ‘Urinetown’

SPOKANE VALLEY – The drama department at University High School in the Central Valley School District has received 14 nominations for the 5th Avenue Theater awards for its production of “Urinetown.”

The Seattle theater evaluated 105 productions over the school year throughout the state and will announce the winners in its Tony-style awards ceremony next month.

Both “Urinetown” and the school’s production of “Les Miserables” participated. “Urinetown” received nominations for outstanding overall musical, outstanding direction by Briane Green, outstanding music direction by Zach Baker, outstanding choreography by Green, outstanding scenic design by George Green, outstanding lighting design by Dan Heggem, outstanding costume design by Kearney Paine, outstanding hair and makeup design by Green and Paine, outstanding stage crew by Becca Marsh and crew, outstanding performance by a leading actress for Shelby Horton as Hope Cladwell, outstanding performance by a supporting actress for Aubree Peterson as Little Sally, outstanding performance by an ensemble actor for Mathias Oliver as Hot Blades Harry, outstanding performance by a chorus, outstanding performance by a group for the Rebels, and special honors student achievement for Joseph Hall.

City sponsoring photo contest

SPOKANE VALLEY – The city of Spokane Valley is sponsoring a “This is Spokane Valley” photo contest as part of the city’s 10th anniversary celebration. Photographers of all ages are invited to submit a photo featuring an event, people or scenic views taken inside the city limits.

The winning photo could be used to promote the city. Several prizes are also up for grabs, including an iPad mini and two iPod Touches.

The entry deadline is July 31. Contest rules and entry information are available at www.spokane valley10.com or at City Hall, 11707 E. Sprague Ave. Winners will be announced during Valleyfest in September.

CV senior awarded $500 scholarship

SPOKANE VALLEY – Central Valley High School graduating senior Madison Rountree was awarded the 2013 Sam Campbell Memorial Scholarship by the Greater Spokane Valley Chamber of Commerce.

The annual $500 scholarship is given to a senior who plans to study business.

Rountree plans to study business management and public relations at Linfield College in McMinnville, Ore.
