William F. “Bill” Campbell passed away peacefully on August 14, 2013 at the Spokane Veterans Home in Spokane, Washington at the age of 87.
Bill was born on May 1, 1926 in Hastings, Nebraska.
Bill is preceded in death by his parents, Daniel W. and Katherine B. Campbell of Niobrara, NB, his six siblings and his second wife, Betty Swem of Las Vegas, NV.
Bill is survived by his three sons from his first marriage: William Kevin Campbell of Newtonville, MA, Robert Colin Campbell of Cheney, WA and Stuart Douglas Campbell of Sumner, WA along with nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Bill graduated high school at age 16 and attended Northwestern University until, he enlisted in the Navy on May 15, 1943.
He attended the V-12 Navy College Training Program at Peru State College, University of Notre Dame and Harvard University for his Officer’s Training.
He was in the Navy for over 19 years and served three tours of duty, in the Pacific, during World War II and the Korean War as a Transportation Navigator, which he thoroughly enjoyed.
Bill was an Assistant Communication Officer as well as an Executive Officer and was honorably discharged as a Lieutenant on July 19, 1962.
Bill received eight awards: Naval Reserve Ribbon, American Defense Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Ribbon, World War II Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Medal (Japan), Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal and National Defense Service Medal.
Bill loved business administration and spent most of his years in Sales and Marketing in Las Vegas, NV.
Bill was an avid reader.
He read many types of literature including history, novels, biographies and even dictionaries.
Bill was a golf fanatic!
He watched all the major golf tournaments including every Masters Tournament.
He shared his love and knowledge of the sport with everyone.
The family sincerely thanks “all” the Staff at the Spokane Veterans Home for providing many years of compassionate care and outstanding service to Bill.
We also thank Horizon Hospice for their support in the final week of Bill’s life.
We are forever grateful!
Bill leaves behind many people, family and friends who loved him and will miss him dearly.
Two Services will take place on October 18, 2013: Memorial Service at 10:00 -” 11:00am at the Spokane Veterans Home in Spokane, WA and a Military Funeral Honors Ceremony at 3:00 -” 3:30pm at the Washington State Veterans Cemetery in Medical Lake, WA.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers donations to be given in Bill’s memory to the Spokane Veterans Home, 222 E. 5th Avenue, Spokane, WA 99202 and/or Horizon Hospice 123 W. Cascade Way, Suite A, Spokane, WA 99208.
