Lake City, Post Falls girls soccer face tough openers

The Lake City and Post Falls girls soccer teams have some work to do to earn a rematch of last year’s exciting title match.

The local teams have drawn the winningest teams in the eight-team 5A tournament, which runs today through Saturday in Meridian.

Lake City won the 5A championship last season, defeating the Trojans on penalty kicks. This year the Timberwolves (9-5-3) open against Boise (15-2-1) today at 11:30 a.m. at Meridian High. At the same time, Post Falls (10-4-2) will face Rocky Mountain (15-1-2) on the latter’s home field.

If both teams win today and again on Friday, they’ll play for the title on Saturday afternoon in the title game at Rocky Mountain High.

In the 4A tournament, Sandpoint (10-3-4) takes on Blackfoot at 11 a.m. at Brothers Park in Caldwell. 3A representative Coeur d’Alene Charter (12-3-3) faces Filer at the same time at Vallivue High in Caldwell.

Boys: Defending 5A champion Post Falls brings a 10-5-1 record into the state tournament and will play Timberline of Boise (10-7-0) today at 11:30 a.m. at Eagle High.

Lake City (9-2-4) takes on Boise (15-1-2) in a first-round game at Rocky Mountain High.
