A man suspected of shooting his ex-girlfriend’s new beau at a home in Spokane Valley was arrested early Friday morning, the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office said.
John Clyde Payne, 60, was last seen speeding away from 4035 S. Conifer Ct. on a red Harley Davidson motorcycle around 7 p.m. The homeowner, an adult woman, said Payne arrived at her residence and shot her male friend in the face before fleeing. The shooting victim walked to the ambulance and was alert when deputies arrived. His injuries are described as serious, but not life threatening. The victim was still being treated Friday morning.
Deputies scoured the area for several hours, eventually discovering Payne hiding in a wooded area about a mile away around 2:30 a.m. A weapon was discovered when law enforcement took Payne into custody. Payne is scheduled to make a first appearance on felony charges of attempted first-degree murder and first-degree assault Friday afternoon.
