Idaho volleyball team wins Bronco Classic

Jessica Hastriter and Katelyn Peterson had career highs in kills to lead the Idaho volleyball team to a five-set win over North Texas (6-6) in the Bronco Classic title match Saturday morning in Boise.

Set scores were 25-23, 22-25, 25-20, 22-25 and 16-14.

Hastriter finished with 23 kills and Peterson added 20. Vandals’ setter Meredith Coba dished out 67 assists, easily eclipsing her previous career high of 50.

Idaho (6-4) won all three of its matches at the tournament.

• Washington State ran its record to 10-0 with straight-set wins over Lamar and Sam Houston State at the Sam Houston Invitational in Huntsville, Texas.

The Cougars opened with a 25-17, 25-14, 25-17 win over Lamar. WSU freshman Kyra Holt had 15 kills and seven digs. Jaicee Harris added nine kills and 16 digs.

Holt had a match-high 12 kills in the Cougars’ 25-15, 25-14, 25-21 win over Sam Houston State (4-6).

• Meredith Crenshaw had 11 kills and six blocks to guide Gonzaga to a 25-20, 25-23, 25-23 win over Akron (5-4) at the Bobcat Classic in Bozeman.

Savannah Blinn added 12 kills and Lyndsay Palmer dished out 26 assists for the Bulldogs (4-5), who jumped out to a 19-9 lead in the first set. GU was swept by South Dakota earlier in the day.

• Eastern Washington (3-9) was swept by a pair of top-10 teams at the San Diego Tournament.

The Eagles opened with a 25-16, 25-12, 25-12 loss to No. 9 San Diego. EWU freshman Kylie Curtis had seven kills.

In their next match, the Eagles fell 25-12, 25-23, 25-21 to top-ranked USC (8-1). Eastern’s Lindsay Niemeier (Shadle Park High) dished out a team-high 19 assists. Niemeier and USC’s Alexis Olgard (Mead) are former club teammates. Olgard had three kills against the Eagles.

• Whitworth (6-6) swept DeSales and Trinity and finished 3-1 at the two-day Trinity Invitational in San Antonio.

The Pirates opened the day with a 25-21, 25-19, 25-20 win over DeSales (6-2). Nicole Leonard and Kristine Kardell combined for 24 kills and Briauna Stadeli, Katie Adams and Izze Ginley each had two aces.

Whitworth then beat Trinity (9-3) 25-18, 25-18, 25-19, thanks to 14 kills from Jalana White.

• North Idaho swept Seward County but was swept by Iowa Western at the Northeast Invitational in Sterling, Colo.

Leeta Gap had 11 kills and Anyssa Matheson added nine kills and three blocks in the Cardinals’ win over Seward County.

Cross country

Andrew Gonzales took eighth place and led the Washington State men to a second-place finish at the Sundodger Invitational at Lincoln Park in Seattle.

Gonzales finished the 8,000-meter course in 24 minutes, 13.56 seconds. WSU’s Forrest Shaffer was 11th (24:14.23), Lee George was 12th (24:16.01) and John Whelan was 20th (24:29.45).

Gonzaga, led by Nick Roche’s fifth-place finish, took third. Roche crossed in 24:09. GU’s Willie Milan was 13th (24:17), Troy Fraley was 15th (24:24) and Kyle Branch was 16th (24:26).

The Bulldogs women took fourth, thanks to top-20 finishes from Lauren Bergam and Maggie Jones. Bergam covered the 6,000-meter course in 21:32, good enough for 14th place, and Jones took 17th in 21:48.

Washington won the men’s and women’s races. The Whitworth men and women both took sixth place in the lower division races.

Men’s soccer

Jeff Roland’s third-minute goal proved to be the difference in Evergreen State’s 1-0 nonconference win over Whitworth at Willamette University in Salem, Ore.

The Pirates (1-1-1) outshot the Geoducks (2-1-1) 14-8, including 10-2 in the second half.

• Devin Leon and Chris Donich netted two goals apiece and Community Colleges of Spokane shut out Shoreline (0-3-2, 0-1-1) 6-0 in an NWAACC match at Spokane Falls Community College. Reece Jackson’s goal one minute into the contest set the tone for the Sasquatch (5-0-2, 1-0-1).

Women’s soccer

CC Spokane (3-0-2, 1-0-1) scored twice in each half and secured its first NWAACC win of the season by blanking Shoreline (2-2-1, 0-1-1) 4-0 at SFCC.

Kat Tsoukalas gave CCS an early lead with an unassisted goal in the fifth minute. Emily Fejeran scored just before halftime to make it 2-0 and Laura Seymour and Lindsay Dehaas added second-half goals.

Prep boys soccer

Matt Hulquist had a hat trick in the first half and finished with five goals to guide host Coeur d’Alene (5-0-1, 2-0) to a 5-1 win over Lewiston (2-3, 0-2) in Inland Empire League 5A play. Devin Kholes and Braden Ridgewell had two assists apiece for the Vikings.

Prep cross country

Deer Park’s Kody Turner took first place and led the Stags to the team title at the Moses Lake Invitational. Turner finished in 16:54.

University won the girls title thanks to five top-10 finishes. The Titans’ Courtney Sherick finished second in 20:25.

• The Coeur d’Alene boys and girls raced to victories at the Hayden Canyon Invitational.

Sandpoint’s Sam Levora won the boys race in 16:18 and Moscow’s Katherine Ruck was the girls champion in 19:28.
