GU women rowing favorites

Defending champion Gonzaga has been selected to repeat as West Coast Conference women’s rowing champion and the Zags placed four on the preseason all-conference team.

The Bulldogs received five first-place votes and 35 points in balloting by the seven league coaches to finish ahead of 2012 champion San Diego, which had the other two first-place votes and 27 points.

GU senior Malori McGill was named to the preseason All-WCC team for the second straight season and was joined by sophomore teammates Brooklyn Beeler, Kara Soueck and Maddie Turbes.

College golf

Cole Lorenzo’s 3-under 141 led the Community Colleges of Spokane men to a 24-stroke victory in an NWAACC league match at Horn Rapids Golf Club in Richland on Monday.

CCS had four of the low six scorers – Evan Omelia and Johnny Duffin (Coeur d’Alene High) shot 146s and Zack Spencer (Mt. Spokane) a 147 – in compiling a 580 team score. Host Columbia Basin College was second at 604.

Josh Whitley of Skagit Valley was second at 145.

CCS was second to CBC in the women’s event at the same site, 524-553.

The Rypien sisters, sophomore Brigid (180) and freshman Keara (189) from North Central, led the Sasquatch.

Megan Schulz of Centralia was medalist at 161. Hope Neidhold of CBC was second with a 166.
