Area roundup: NIC men’s golf loses on tiebreaker

Host school Northwest Nazarene won a tiebreaker with the North Idaho Cardinals to capture the men’s team title Tuesday at Ridgecrest Golf Course in Nampa, Idaho.

Angus Montgomery had rounds of 70, 67 and 74 to earn medalist honors with a 5-under-par 211 total for the Cardinals.

The Cardinals, who led by one stroke heading into the final round, and NNU finished with 890 totals. The tiebreaker was based on final round scores, which NNU won 302-303.

• The North Idaho Cardinals finished last in a five-team women’s tourney hosted by Northwest Nazarene at Ridgecrest Golf Course in Nampa, Idaho.

Lewis-Clark State won the team title by 38 strokes over runner-up NNU.

NIC was led by Jennie Williams 184 two-round total.

Westminster College’s Brandi Bork was the medalist with an 11-over 155.

Honors

A pair of Idaho Vandals was named the Western Athletic Conference athlete-of-the-week honors in tennis.

Artemiy Nikitin won the men’s award after going 2-0 in No. 1 singles play, while Victoria Lozano won the women’s award after going 2-0 in No. 1 singles and 1-1 in No. 1 doubles.

• Eastern Washington’s Jordan Arakawa was named the Big Sky Conference male field athlete of the week for the week of April 1.

Arakawa won the hammer throw at the Al Manuel Invitational meet in Missoula by a whopping 30 feet with a personal-best toss of 219 feet, 3 inches.
