In Brief: Police arrest man suspected in April 1 shooting

From Staff And Wire Reports

Spokane police arrested a nine-time convicted felon who they suspect shot and wounded a man last week in north Spokane.

Investigators say Troy Pasina, 36, fought with another man over damage to a car before shooting him April 1 in the 3300 block of East Grace Avenue.

The victim was dropped off at Providence Holy Family Hospital where he is still recovering.

Pasina faces charges of assault and unlawful gun possession.

Pasina, who has convictions for assault and residential burglary, was arrested without incident at a residence in the 2400 block of North Pittsburg Street on Thursday.

A gun was found in the purse of a woman who said she had found it inside the home and claimed not to know Pasina. However, Pasina called her “babe” while speaking to her in front of detectives, according to court records.

WSP: Oso is not a tourist attraction

ARLINGTON, Wash. – Three weeks after the deadly Oso mudslide, the Washington State Patrol wants drivers to know the slide area is “not a tourist attraction.”

In a statement Friday, Trooper Keith Leary said only rescuers and emergency vehicles are allowed past the closure points along Washington Highway 530 on the west and east ends of the slide area. Troopers will turn back any drivers or pedestrians without proper credentials.

Leary said the patrol has gotten numerous inquiries from people in quest of a look at the slide or a spot to photograph it.

The slide is not visible from the closure points.

As of Friday, 36 victims of the March 22 slide have been recovered and identified while seven people remain on a missing list.

Man pleads guilty in trailer park death

MOSCOW, Idaho – A North Idaho man has pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in the shooting death of an acquaintance at a trailer park.

Nathaniel H. Nisbet, 28, made the plea Thursday in 2nd District Court, the Lewiston Tribune reported. In exchange, prosecutors dropped a second-degree murder charge.

Police say Nisbet shot and killed 42-year-old Charles “Pat” McMichael during a confrontation at the Bel Air Mobile Home Park in Moscow on Nov. 10.

Authorities say McMichael arrived at the home with his wife and Nisbet’s estranged wife to change the locks on her mobile home, but McMichael found Nisbet inside with a 9 mm pistol.

Judge John R. Stegner has yet to rule on whether he will accept the plea agreement.

If he does, Nisbet faces up to 15 years in prison.

Walla Walla native dies in plane crash

WALLA WALLA – A Walla Walla native who spent most of his life as a pilot for Seventh-day Adventist relief missions overseas died in a plane crash Wednesday in Indonesia.

Bob Roberts was taking off from Adventist Aviation-Indonesia headquarters in Sentani, on the Pacific archipelago’s Papua Province, when the airplane failed to gain sufficient altitude and crashed into a bridge beyond the end of the runway and burst into flames, according to the Jakarta Post, quoting a police official.

Six passengers were aboard the Quest Kodiak. Roberts, 62, and a male passenger identified as Danis Kobak, 34, died in the crash, the newspaper reported. Two other passengers suffered serious injuries and three suffered minor injuries.

“He loved to fly, it was his passion,” Roberts’ sister, Verna Canaday, who lives in the Tri-Cities, told the Union-Bulletin Thursday. “So I like to say to people that he died with his boots on.”

She said her brother worked for the church in Africa from 1976 to 1991 flying health-care and relief missions. He then went to Indonesia in the early 1990s with his wife, Jan, to do the same work there.
