Obituary: Krieg, Sr. Agnes Marie (Mary Madalena), Snjm

Age 101

KRIEG, Sr. Agnes Marie (Mary Madalena) SNJM Agnes Marie Krieg was born December 31, 1912, in Edmonton, Canada to Edward and Mary Magdalen Humm Krieg.

She was later joined by her brother, Edward and her sister, Mary.

The family moved back to the states, the city of Spokane when she was eight years of age.

Her father followed the construction boom to California for a time, but by 1928 the Depression, a forest fire and a break in the San Fernando Dam inspired a return to Spokane.

The children attended St. Aloysius Elementary School, and Agnes Marie graduated from Holy Names Academy in 1931.

She joined the Sisters of the Holy Names that summer, pronouncing her vows in 1933 as Sister Mary Madalena.

She began her ministry as a music teacher in 1933, continuing until 1964 in parish schools in Portland, Astoria, Bend, Seattle, Spokane, St. Helen’s and Pomeroy.

In 1964, she transferred to classroom teaching until 1978.

In 1979, Sister Agnes Marie began a ministry as Alumni Assistant, then Alumni Director at Fort Wright College, took a break to tutor at St. Patrick’s, and then used her expertise in alum work to begin an Alumni Association for St. Patrick’s, the only grade school in Spokane to have one.

By 1989, that work was organized and taken care of by others, so she retired to offer community service within her religious community, living at Marian Hall, Spokane.

Sister says “I have always had a green thumb and working with flowers has been a hobby of mine all through the years.

Retiring has given me much more time to enjoy this wonderful hobby.”

The yard at Marian Hall boasted of her gift!

Sister loved outings, and signed up enthusiastically for trips to Green Bluff, to St. Thomas Church in Coeur d’Alene-because it was built by her father, lunch-especially if a good hamburger might be an option!

A trip to Doyle’s ice cream parlor was a delight for her, and she loved being driven around Spokane to visit favorite memories.

She loved parties, and the celebration of her 100th birthday topped the list of the best!

Over the years, Sister was able to care for her mother, her brother and her sister in their last years, and she has been grateful to her community for those precious opportunities Sister Agnes Marie had a unique giggle, and a way of calling us “Honey” that no one else can claim!

She charmed her care-givers into total dedication!

She summed up her life by saying, “I didn’t expect to have a career.

I just wanted to be with Our Lord and He showed me how.”

Sister Agnes Marie is survived by her religious sisters; nephew, Michael Krieg (Dr. Georgie Ann Weatherby) and niece Barbara Giem of Spokane, WA; and niece, Marilee Matthews of Tempe, AZ; grand nieces, Kirsten Joan (Nantha) of Tempe, AZ, Susan Englert (Jim) of Missoula, Mt, and Cheryl Connors (Sean) of Spokane; grand nephews, Ken Mathews (Justyna) of New York, NY, and John Giem of Spokane; seven great-grand nieces and nephews; and one great-great-grand niece.

All are grateful for the loving and gracious care provided by Clare Bridge and Hospice personnel.

Sister died April 17, 2014, in Spokane, WA.

Mass of Resurrection will be at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, April 24, 2014, at Convent of the Holy Names, Spokane.
