In brief: Couple, child rescued after capsizing, swim

A couple and their 2-year-old daughter were rescued Thursday evening from Horseshoe Lake in Pend Oreille County after their fishing boat swamped and they swam to shore. The couple then got lost in rough terrain on the east side of the lake when they tried to find their way back to their car.

The man, identified as 37-year-old Jeremy Arnold, of Spokane, swam back across the lake to the west shore alone to find a resident to call 911, according to a Pend Oreille County Sheriff’s Office news release. Search and rescue teams responded along with the Air One helicopter from the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office.

Air One located 33-year-old Mandy Waters, of Wilbur, Wash., and her daughter on a ridge line. The two were treated for mild hypothermia.

School’s penny drive will kick off today

The Spokane Guilds’ School’s annual penny drive will be held at various locations in Spokane today.

The event raises money to help fund the operation of the school, which provides therapy for children with developmental delays. Government funding cuts over the past five years have been “devastating” to the school’s mission, according to a news release.

“Eighty percent of the families served by the Spokane Guilds’ School are at or below the poverty level,” the release said.

Donations will be accepted at 13 sites in Spokane County from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. For a list of sites, visit www.guildschool.org/ penny-drive.

Missing woman’s body discovered in landfill

McMINNVILLE, Ore. – Authorities say a Salem woman’s body was transported in a garbage truck to a landfill in Yamhill County, where a worker found it.

Salem police Lt. Steve Birr said the woman was identified through fingerprints as 55-year-old Solveg Birgitte Pedersen Cox. While an autopsy was conducted Friday, Birr said the cause of death is undetermined pending the result of toxicology tests.

Birr told the Statesman Journal newspaper that officers were able to track the woman’s activities, including phone calls, through Wednesday evening. The body was found in the landfill Thursday.

Police are investigating, although Birr said, “We’re not convinced at this point that it’s criminal.”
