Obituary: Hopkins-Salisbury, Mary Elizabeth “Betty”

Age 93

HOPKINS-SALISBURY, Mary Elizabeth “Betty” (Age 92) Betty Hopkins-Salisbury was born Mary Elizabeth Reed on May 16, 1921 in Spokane, WA., to Elizabeth V. and Stephen D. Reed and died April 24, 2014.

Betty attended St. Anthony Elementary School and was in the first 8th grade graduating class.

She attended Marycliff High school and graduated from North Central High School in 1938.

She worked as a comptometer operator at Loos-Wiles Biscuit Co. during WW2.

In 1943 she married Alex L. Hopkins and began raising their nine children.

Together they built a home next to the house Betty grew up in on W. Alice Ave. Betty was very involved in the St. Anthony Catholic parish and was a member of the Altar Society and the Women’s Guild.

She was in the charge of the church hall for many years.

Betty was also a member of a women’s service organization called Kappa Zeta for most of her adult life.

Alex and Betty were competitive ballroom dancers for many years, winning numerous trophies and awards.

After the death of Alex in 1988, Betty married Bill Salisbury in 1991.

Betty was preceded in death by husband, Alex Hopkins in 1988; second husband, Bill Salisbury in 2011; brother, John Reed; grandson, Matthew Hopkins; son-in-law, Bob Doler and daughter-in-law, Jan Hopkins.

Survived by her children, Mark Hopkins (Cathy), Cheney, WA; Leigh Hopkins, John Hopkins (Ellen), Dana Hopkins (Leslie) and Paul Hopkins (Deanna) all of Spokane; Steve Hopkins, Phoenix, AZ, Lori Nicholas (Larry), Dayton, OH, Marian Doler, Coeur d’Alene, ID, and Shirley Floyd, Grandview, WA; brother, Charles Reed, Los Gatos, CA; 22 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

A viewing will be held at Hazen & Jaeger Funeral Home, 1306 N. Monroe St, Spokane on Tuesday, April 29, 2014 from 3:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. and Wednesday, April 30, 2014 from 10:00 A.M. to 10:45 a.m. at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, 2320 N. Cedar, Spokane followed immediately by a Vigil Service and Funeral Mass with Rev.

Jose Millan presiding.

Committal Services will be at Greenwood Memorial Terrace, 211 N. Government Way, Spokane at 3:30 P.M.
