Woods parts with swing coach Foley

From Staff And Wire Reports

Golf: Tiger Woods is leaving swing coach Sean Foley after four years and no majors.

Woods said on his website Monday he will no longer work with Foley. Woods has had back trouble the last year and is taking the next three months to get stronger.

Foley was the third coach Woods hired as a professional. He left Butch Harmon in 2003 and began working with Hank Haney a year later. He parted with Haney in the spring of 2010 when Woods returned from the scandal in his personal life.

Woods began working with Foley at the 2010 PGA Championship.

• DBC field shrinks: The Deutsche Bank Championship now has a smaller field than the Masters.

Even though the top 100 advanced to the second FedEx Cup playoff event, six players either did not enter or withdrew. That leaves a 94-man field at the TPC Boston.

The Masters, the smallest of the majors, had 97 players this year.

Justin Rose and Sergio Garcia are getting some rest during a hectic month that ends with the Ryder Cup. Graeme McDowell withdrew because his wife gave birth to a girl on Monday, and Paul Casey withdrew because his wife is due with their first child next Monday.

Jason Dufner withdrew with a neck injury. Dustin Johnson is on a “voluntary leave” for “personal challenges.”

Matthews bolts ahead at Vuelta

Miscellany: Michael Matthews of Australia sprinted to victory on a hot and sunny third stage of the Spanish Vuelta to take the overall lead of the three-week grand tour.

Matthews passed Daniel Martin at the finish line to claim the hilly 122.9-mile ride from Cadiz to Arcos de la Frontera, Spain in 5 hours, 12 minutes, 14 seconds. Joaquim Rodriguez crossed third.

Matthews’ win gave him the red leader’s jersey from Alejandro Valverde.

Two-time winner Alberto Contador trails by 23 seconds, while Chris Froome is 31 seconds back followed by Rodriguez another seven seconds behind.

Valverde and two other Movistar teammates crashed with less than 20 kilometers to go when Jonathan Castroviejo fell while trying to grab a bag of water bottles from a team worker.

Valverde took a blow to the back but all three got back on their bikes and finished in the group.

Today’s fourth stage is a 102.3-mile ride from Mairena del Alcor to Cordoba.

Sens extend Anderson: Goaltender Craig Anderson has signed a $12.6 million, three-year contract extension with the Ottawa Senators.

Anderson was acquired from Colorado in 2011 and is now under contract through the 2017-18 season.

Anderson had an NHL-best .941 save percentage in the lockout-shortened 2013 season to help Ottawa make the playoffs amid injuries. His percentage dropped to .911 last year.

The Senators recently re-signed restricted free-agent goaltender Robin Lehner to a $6.7 million, three-year contract.
