Washington State’s front seven was supposed to be the strength of the defense, but it was never able to prevent the Scarlet Knights running game from putting together long, successful drives. As a team Rutgers averaged five yards per rush on 43 carries. The Cougars were without starting Sam linebacker Cyrus Coen.

Receiver Leonte Carroo took the first play of the game 78 yards for a score and within seconds the Cougars were playing catch-up. Carroo finished with 151 yards on six receptions and provided a change of pace to Rutgers’ steady diet of run plays.
