This weekend, it’s time to see what you can do

Eckart Preu and the Spokane Symphony return to Comstock Park this weekend. They’ll also play at Pavillion Park in Liberty Lake.

The kids are singing a tune these days. Maybe you’ve heard of it? It’s called “Let It Go.”

The Spokane Symphony will play along in two concerts this holiday weekend, inviting the audience to sing the lyrics to the hit from Disney’s “Frozen.”

It’ll be extending a tradition that started in 1985, giving free outdoor concerts to launch its season. Saturday’s concert takes place at Pavillion Park in Liberty Lake. Monday’s concert is slated for Comstock Park on the South Hill.

“This year we want to do something special and unforgettable for the many children in the audience, and what could be more special than singing along with a professional orchestra?” Eckart Preu, the symphony’s music director, said in a news release. “Singing introduces us to music, and singing is one of the happiest things you can do.”

Also on the program, along with some patriotic numbers: Sergei Prokofiev’s “Peter and the Wolf,” with narration by actor Jim Swoboda; John Williams’ “The Flight to Neverland” from “Hook”; and Williams’ theme from “Star Wars.”

And, speaking of frozen, free ice cream will be distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis before the Comstock Park concert. An “instrument petting zoo” – where kids can try out various music makers – and other activities for children and parents also will precede the Comstock Park concert.

Audiences at both concerts are invited to bring picnic dinners, blankets and chairs.
