Iran flying U.S.-built F-4s

 (File)

Iran has been using American-built F-4 Phantom jets, similar to the plane pictured above, on some of its recent airstrikes against Islamic State militants in Iraq. The F-4 Phantom is a twin-engine, fighter-bomber jet built by McDonnell Aircraft Corp. for the U.S. Navy from 1961 until production ceased in 1981. Although the jets were sold around the world, only Iran and Turkey are said to still fly them and only a dozen or so are believed to be in operating condition.
