In brief: Ice climbers from around the world gather for festival in Bozeman

Staff Reports

Ice climbers from around the world are descending upon Bozeman this week for the 18th annual Bozeman Ice Festival (BIF), presented by Black Diamond Equipment.

The week, through Sunday, has been designated “Ice Week,” a weeklong celebration of ice climbing and the Hyalite tradition.

As ice climbing remains a top contender for approval as a Winter Olympic sport, Hyalite canyon, a 30-minute drive from downtown Bozeman, serves as the hub and premiere destination for Olympic-caliber athletes in North America, as it presents the longest season of accessible ice in America.

This year, BIF will host the first internationally sanctioned ice climbing World Cup in North America – the inaugural UIAA Bozeman World Cup – along with the North American Ice Climbing Championships on Friday and Saturday.

What has evolved from locals teaching a few clinics in nearby Hyalite Canyon, BIF now includes four days of on-ice clinics by the top instructors and guides in the world, including the country’s largest women-only clinic.

“Everyone is involved and part of the scene from newbies to the most acclaimed and accomplished athletes in the world,” said Joe Josephson, one of the festival’s original instructors and now Festival Director. “You’ll see beginners hanging out on the ice, in town, at the bar, slideshows, etc., with the most experienced climbers and athletes in the world.”

On Sunday, the World Cup tower is open to all climbers wanting to test their mettle on the World Cup routes. These events are free to all spectators.
