Spokane Chiefs end 16-game losing streak against Portland

PORTLAND – Two pesky losing streaks came to a halt Friday night when the Spokane Chiefs dominated the third period on the Portland Winterhawks’ home ice.

Kailer Yamamoto, Adam Helewka and Keanu Yamamoto scored third-period goals as the Chiefs (15-12-3-0, 33 points) rallied past Portland 4-3 at Veterans Memorial Coliseum to end a five-game losing skid and 16-game streak against Portland.

Spokane’s last win against the Winterhawks came on Jan. 23, 2013.

Portland (17-14-0-3, 37) led 3-1 after two periods, aided by an odd call in the first period when the replay official awarded Blake Heinrich a goal a minute after the play ended.

The Chiefs will play their next three games against Prince George, starting tonight at the Arena. Tonight is also the team’s annual Teddy Bear Toss night to collect stuffed animals for charity.

The Chiefs are 0-1 against Prince George this season.
