Prep wrestling: University holds off Mt. Spokane

In a match between two top-seven teams at February’s 3A Mat Classic XXVI, and stacked with finishers at last season’s event, it was University winning nine of the 14 events en route to a 54-21 Greater Spokane League wrestling win over Mt. Spokane at University High School on Wednesday night.

Behind wins from 2014 State 3A champion Tate Orndorff at 285 pounds, and second-place finisher Cam Sorenson (138), along with three pins, the quickest in 43 seconds by Terrell Sanders (106), the Titans were able to hold off the Wildcats.

Mt. Spokane was led by state placers Alec Hoover (126) and Rich Bondurant (145), who both won by pins.

North Central 53, Rogers 18: The reigning State 3A champs got a pin from state champion Izaec Quintanilla in the 170 class, and his brother Clai won his match in the 120 weight class on a technical fall, in a GSL match.

Central Valley 51, Gonzaga Prep 21: The Bears won 10 out of 14 individual matches, with three ending in less than two minutes because of pins, defeating the Bullpups in GSL action.

Lewis and Clark 31, Shadle Park 31-28: Eli Malm’s 7-3 comeback win in the 132 class clinched the GSL victory for the host Tigers over the Highlanders. Devin Doneen added a 5-3 overtime win in the 126 weight class for LC.

Mead 49, Ferris 18: The Panthers won 10 out of 14 matches, with two pins coming in under two minutes, in the GSL win over the host Saxons.

Great Northern League

East Valley 63, West Valley 15: The Knights won 10 out of 14 matches, including the 160 weight class on a pin by Trey Meyer in just 49 seconds, in a GNL matchup.

Clarkston 52, Pullman 32: Tanner Benton recorded a pin in 1 minute, 15 seconds for the Bantams for a GNL triumph.
