College football notes: Memphis, BYU pledge to investigate Miami Beach Bowl brawl

Associated Press

The president of the University of Memphis says he has asked the school’s athletic director to work with coach Justin Fuente in investigating the postgame fight that broke out between BYU and the Tigers after the Miami Beach Bowl.

“We will provide another statement after the completion of that inquiry,” Memphis president M. David Rudd said in a statement issued Tuesday.

BYU athletic director Tom Holmoe tweeted last Monday night that “we expect better of our athletes, even in the face of a difficult loss. We intend to fully review this matter. I apologize to Cougar Nation.”

The Tigers beat BYU 55-48 in overtime in the first Miami Beach Bowl.

Rosenbach hired

Former Washington State and Pullman High School quarterback Timm Rosenbach has been named head football coach at Adams State in Alamosa, Colorado.

Rosenbach replaces retiring Marty Heaton at the Division II school. Rosenbach, 48, was most recently the offensive coordinator at UNLV. Other coaching stops include Eastern Washington, Montana, New Mexico State and Washington State.

In 1988, Rosenbach led one of the most improbable wins in WSU history. Down 27-6 to top-ranked UCLA and All-American quarterback Troy Aikman, Rosenbach rallied the Cougars to a 34-30 victory at the Rose Bowl.
