Two children die after falling through Idaho pond’s ice

Pair were looking for their dog, police said

From staff reports
Two children died Sunday afternoon after falling through ice covering a pond near Plummer, Idaho, according to the Coeur d’Alene tribe. Jose Reyes, 9, and Elena Maravilla, 5, were pronounced dead at Kootenai Medical Center after 4:30 p.m. Sunday, the tribe said. The children were found at a pond on Old Agency Loop Road. A grandmother called 911 and then tried to pull the children from the water, which is estimated to be about six feet deep, according to a news release. The tribe said it appeared the children were looking for their dog when they fell through the ice. An official cause of death will be announced after scheduled autopsies. In a statement Monday, Coeur d’Alene Tribal Police Chief Cody SiJohn offered condolences. “Our hearts go out to the family of these young ones,” SiJohn said.
