Boys basketball: Wellpinit tops Valley Christian in thriller

Wellpinit freshman Cedric Bowen hit a 3-pointer in the final seconds and the Redskins claimed a spot in the District 7 1B title game with a 55-52 win over Valley Christian Saturday night at Deer Park.

Tied at 52 with 22 seconds left, Wellpinit’s Brodie Ford killed some time, drove to the hoop and found Bowen for the game-winner.

Ford led all scorers with 23 points and Jason Holt added 16. Valley Christian’s Nick Cox led three Panthers in double figures with 21 points.

The Redskins (14-9) will play Odessa-Harrington next Saturday in Deer Park to determine the top two seeds to the regional tournament.

Valley Christian (14-8) will play Curlew in a loser-out game Wednesday at Deer Park. The Panthers will have to win their next two games to claim the third and final seed to regionals.

Odessa-Harrington 48, Wilbur-Creston 46: Carsen Weber hit two free throws with 3 seconds left to give the Titans (16-6) a win over the Wildcats (14-8) in Deer Park. Wilbur-Creston’s 3-point heave at the buzzer was off the mark. The Wildcats will play Cusick in a loser-out game Wednesday at Deer Park.

Curlew 54, Republic 45 (OT): Angelo Rivero’s put-back late in the fourth forced overtime and the Cougars (12-7) prevailed in a loser-out game in Deer Park. Curlew’s Gunner Brown scored five of his 13 points in OT.

Cusick 64, Selkirk 55: Alec Bluff scored 22 points and Chad Browneagle added 13 points and 16 rebounds as the Panthers (19-3) beat the Rangers (10-12) in a loser-out game in Deer Park. Selkirk’s Shawn Mailly had 20 points and Dominic Cain added 18, but the Rangers couldn’t overcome a 14-point third-quarter deficit.

Bi-district 6/7 1A

Brewster 79, Lakeside 71: Eli Driessen made 15 of 20 shots, including 4 of 5 3-pointers, and scored 37 points as the Bears clipped the Eagles (17-6) in Okanogan. Ryan Quigley scored 22 points and Cameron Gay and Cody Watkins added 17 apiece for Lakeside, which will play Riverside in a loser-out game Friday at West Valley.

Riverside 56, Newport 33: Tyler Axtell scored 19 points and Dalton Rausch added 10 points and 10 rebounds as the Rams (18-5) staved off elimination with a win over the Grizzlies (11-12) in Okanogan.

Chelan 39, Freeman 29: The Goats used a 13-1 second-quarter run to get past the Scotties (12-10) in a loser-out game in Okanogan.

Bi-district 7/9 2B

St. George’s 63, Asotin 34: Will Tender led three players in double figures with 21 points and the Dragons (24-0) routed the Panthers in Dayton. St. George’s outscored Asotin 21-8 in the second quarter and led 40-14 at halftime. The Dragons will play Liberty on Monday at Mead. Asotin will take on Tri-Cities Prep in a loser-out game Monday at Mt. Spokane.

Liberty 56, Tri-Cities Prep 28: Ryan Thayer made 10 of 16 shots and finished with 25 points and Match Burnham added 20 as the Lancers (20-5) routed the Jaguars in Dayton. Liberty extended its nine-point halftime lead with a 13-2 third-quarter run.

Lind-Ritzville/Sprague 78, Waitsburg-Prescott 33: Connor O’Neill had 21 points and four steals and Cort Ruzicka added 10 points and eight rebounds as the Broncos (20-3) dumped the Tigers in Waitsburg. LRS will play Northwest Christian Monday at Mead.

Northwest Christian 59, Walla Walla Valley 54: Chris Hartis scored 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and Ryan Ricks added 12 points and 10 assists as the Crusaders (15-10) edged the Knights in Waitsburg.

District 9 1B

Garfield-Palouse 84, Rosalia 66: Jesse Lopez scored 30 points and Tyler Thurman added 22 as the Vikings (19-2) earned a spot in the district title game with a win over the Spartans (12-10) in Colfax. Hunter Woltering added 11 rebounds and nine assists for Gar-Pal, which will play Pomeroy Friday in Colfax to determine the top two seeds to the regional tournament. Rosalia will play LaCrosse-Washtucna/Kahlotus in a loser-out game Tuesday in Colfax.

Pomeroy 53, Colton 36: Riley Bott hit five 3-pointers and had 22 points as the Pirates (14-2) topped the Wildcats (9-5) in Colfax. Dillon Frank and Dalton Patchen scored nine apiece for Colton, which will play Touchet in a loser-out game Tuesday in Colfax.

Intermountain

Timberlake 71, Bonners Ferry 51: Keegan Scott had 23 points, seven rebounds, six steals and five assists and the Tigers (7-11, 3-1) defeated the Badgers (8-9, 3-2) at Spirit Lake. Bonners Ferry’s Cameron Woods scored a team-high 20 points.

Kellogg 60, Priest River 28: Jesse Lambert and Tucker Gust scored 13 points apiece and the Wildcats (11-6, 3-2) dominated from the opening tip in a win over the host Spartans (1-16, 0-4).

Nonleague

Lake City 71, Moscow 46: Kyle Guice had 20 points and eight rebounds and Justin Pratt added 17 points and five assists as the Timberwolves (15-5) routed the Bears (7-11) in Coeur d’Alene. Moscow’s Nick Ellison made five 3-pointers and finished with 19 points.

Coeur d’Alene 66, Sandpoint 54: Tony Naccarato scored 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and Colby Daniels added 15 points and seven boards as the Vikings (16-3) beat the visiting Bulldogs (8-12). Sandpoint’s Jeremiah Gagnon scored 21 points.
