Mead gymnasts place third with top score of year

Terry Wood Special to The Spokesman-Review

TACOMA – The Mead gymnastics team put up its best score of the season against a team that could not be caught.

The Panthers, behind a terrific effort from junior Jenna Schlosser, finished third in the State 4A gymnastics meet Friday night at the Tacoma Dome Exhibition Hall.

Woodinville, which won four straight 4A crowns from 2007-10, won its fifth state title in eight years with a team score of 180.475 points. Newport (Bellevue) edged Mead for second, 172.975 to 172.2. Puyallup rounded out the four-team field with a score of 170.95.

Schlosser, who rose to level 9 as a club gymnast, placed second in all-around with a total 37.525. She finished behind all-around champ Marisa Savage of Woodinville (37.95).

Coach Laurie Chadwick was pleased with her team’s effort.

“It was our highest score of the season,” she said. “We had a couple of missteps, but it’s the best we’ve done all year, so I have nothing to complain about.”

Schlosser finished no lower than sixth in all four events and put up the second-highest score (9.625) on vault for the night.

“She had her best vault all season,” Chadwick said, “and she was solid everywhere else.”

Schlosser qualified to compete in all four events in Saturday’s individual finals.

“This was different,” Schlosser said. “It was fun to compete for a team instead of just for yourself.”

In the earlier 3A/2A meet, Kamiakin won its second state title in four years, defeating two-time champion Enumclaw 181.7 to 178.425. Junior Alexis Lawrence of Kamiakin won the all-around title with a personal-best (club or prep) of 38.3. Kiya Bjorge of Southridge (38.05) placed second, followed by Enumclaw senior Olivia Bannerot (37.95).

In an eight-team field, Kamiakin and Enumclaw placed three gymnasts each among the top eight all-around finishers.

Reigan Kampmann of Mt. Spokane placed 12th in all-around with a score of 35.475. Teammate Amara Poquette (35.4) was right behind. Kampmann was eighth on beam (9.225) and Poquette (9.2) was ninth. Both were competing as individuals.
