Idaho golfers take 3rd in California

Ryan Porch fired a final-round 65 to finish in a tie for third and lead Idaho to a third-place finish on Sunday in the 23-team Wyoming Desert Invitational played at The Classic Club in Palm Desert, Calif.

Porch finished with a three-round total of 7-under 209, six strokes back of champion Julien Brun of TCU. Brun also had a final-day 65, tying Porch for the best round of the tournament.

Idaho finished 15 under, tying TCU, with Oregon winning at 27 under and Colorado second at 24 under.

Sean McMullen (214), Aaron Cockerill (215), Jared du Toit (216) and Rylee Iacolucci (221) rounded out the Vandals’ contingent.

Baseball

Gonzaga lost its third straight game as Incarnate Word rallied for an 11-8 victory on the final day of the Irish Baseball Classic in San Antonio.

The Bulldogs (2-6) had an 8-3 lead before the Cardinals came up with eight runs after two were out in the sixth inning.

Mitch Gunsolus went 4 for 5 for Gonzaga while Cory LeBrun and Sam Brown had two hits each. LeBrun led GU with three RBIs.

Starter Derek Callahan (0-2) took the loss, striking out seven in 5 2/3 innings but giving up nine earned runs.

• Two College of Idaho (7-5) pitchers shut out Whitworth on five hits as the Pirates (3-5) lost 7-0 in Caldwell, Idaho. Michael Renner (1-1) got the loss.

• Washington State’s game on Sunday at home against Western Carolina was postponed and is scheduled to be made up as a doubleheader today at 2 p.m.

Softball

Whitworth swept a doubleheader from Willamette, 5-4 and 5-2, at Salem.

Peyton McMahon had two hits, including a double, and three RBIs, driving in what proved to be the winning run for the Pirates (11-3, 4-0 Northwest Conference) in the top of the seventh. Shannon Wessel added three hits, including two doubles.

Perez (5-1) came back to start the second game and went the distance in picking up the victory, giving up one earned run.
