Avista launches liquefied natural gas business

Salix would not operate within utility division

Staff reports
Avista Corp. is jumping into the liquefied natural gas business. The company has launched Salix Inc., which will operate as a subsidiary independent of Avista’s utility division that sells power across the region. Salix will be tasked with exploring domestic market opportunities, especially in the West and Pacific Northwest, according to a company news release issued Tuesday morning. Robert Lafferty has been named president. “Salix will explore ways to extend the significant benefits of natural gas beyond traditional pipeline-supplied markets,” Lafferty is quoted as saying in the release. Liquefied natural gas is primarily used to deliver natural gas more efficiently. It is natural gas that has been treated and condensed into a liquid. It is later turned back into gas for burning.
