Nannies outmuscle Wildcats in thriller

The best game on opening day of the 1B girls was Pateros winning its 22nd straight by handing Wilbur-Creston its first loss in 25 games this season, 51-47.

“We changed our offense a little bit,” Nanny coach Sheri Mortimer said. “Lorie LeDoux is our go-to player and we posted her up, Vanessa Figueroa hit a couple 3’s, we tried to go (to) who was hot. Jessi Dowers came up with a couple key put-backs.”

The Nannies (22-1) were struggling offensively, down 40-34 in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter. Then LeDoux converted a three-point play and hit from the baseline. Figueroa, who had 11 points, followed with one free throw and when she missed the second Dowers, who had 10 points, snuck in for the put-back and a 42-40 lead.

After a WC basket, LeDoux hit a pair of foul shots and Rhiannon Easter made a layup. The Wildcats got within two but then Figueroa hit her third 3 to make it 49-44 and that proved to be the back-breaker.

“Jessi Dowers stepped up big time,” said LeDoux, who had 19 points and nine boards. “She started boxing out, she got aggressive, she got mean. She had some big boards. I just relaxed, focused on the rim and blocked out everything else.”

Kaelee Reed had 15 for Wilbur-Creston and Jessica Boyer 13.
