Conference tournaments: Seton Hall surprises Villanova

Sterling Gibbs hit a step-back jumper at the buzzer and Seton Hall stunned No. 3 Villanova 64-63 in a thrilling Big East quarterfinal Thursday in New York, a loss that could cost the Wildcats a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament.

Seton Hall advanced to the Big East tournament semifinals for the first time in 13 years. They will play Providence tonight at Madison Square Garden. Providence defeated St. John’s 79-74.

In today’s other semifinal, No. 2 seed Creighton will play No. 3 seed Xavier. For Creighton, Doug McDermott put on a dazzling shooting display in his Big East tournament debut, scoring a first-half 27 points in the Bluejays’ 84-62 win over DePaul. He finished with 35 points. Xavier defeated Marquette 68-65.

Atlantic Coast

Boris Bojanovsky took a pass from Okaro White and threw down a dunk with 0.4 seconds left to lift Florida State past Maryland 67-65 in the second round of the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament at Greensboro, N.C.

The loss becomes the final ACC game for Maryland, which is joining the Big Ten next year.

Ninth-seeded Florida State will play top-seeded Virginia in a quarterfinal today.

Fifth-seeded Pittsburgh, making its ACC tournament debut, routed Wake Forest 84-55 and will play fourth-seeded North Carolina in a quarterfinal.

Seventh-seeded North Carolina State defeated Miami 67-58 and will play third-seeded Syracuse in a quarterfinal.

Clemson and Georgia Tech went to overtime before the Tigers prevailed 69-65. Clemson will play second-seeded Duke in a quarterfinal.

Big 12

Isaiah Austin scored 18 points and Baylor held on after blowing most of a 21-point lead for a 78-73 victory over Oklahoma in a quarterfinal at Kansas City, Mo.

Baylor will play Texas in the semifinals today. Texas defeated West Virginia 66-49.

In the other semifinal, top-seeded Kansas will play Iowa State.

Andrew Wiggins scored 30 points and Wayne Selden Jr. had 14 to lead Kansas to a tough 77-70 victory over Oklahoma State in overtime.

Iowa State defeated Kansas State 91-85.

Big Ten

Tre Demps had 20 points, including four 3-pointers and Drew Crawford added 15 points and six assists to lead 11th-seeded Northwestern to a 67-62 victory over No. 6 Iowa at Indianapolis.

Northwestern will play Michigan State in the quarterfinals today.

Austin Hollins scored 18 points, Deandre Mathieu added 13 and Andre Hollins hit a late 3-pointer to give Minnesota a 63-56 victory over Penn State and a quarterfinal matchup against Wisconsin.

LaQuinton Ross scored 19 points and Aaron Craft finished with 16, helping Ohio State hang on for a 63-61 victory over Purdue and advance to the quarterfinals against Nebraska.

Tracy Abrams had 25 points to lead ninth-seeded Illinois to a 64-54 win over eight-seed Indiana and advance to the quarterfinals against regular season champion Michigan.

Southeastern

Jabari Brown scored 26 points, Earnest Ross added 24 and Missouri barely kept alive its hopes of an NCAA bid, beating Texas A&M 91-83 in double overtime at Atlanta.

Missouri will play top-ranked Florida in the quarterfinals.

South Carolina won its second straight game in the torunament, upsetting Arkansas 71-69 and likely knocking the Razorbacks out of the NCAA tournament.

South Carolina will play Tennessee in the quarterfinals.

Shavon Coleman scored 15 points on five 3-pointers and Louisiana State preserved its slim NCAA hopes by beating Alabama 68-56.

LSU will play Kentucky in the quarterfinals.

Marshall Henderson and Jarvis Summers each scored 21 points and Mississippi rallied from a deficit of 13 points to beat Mississippi State 78-66 and advance to the quarterfinals against Georgia.
